Performance Workshop with Athena Nation Saturday, Feb 2

Workshop One
Fight or Flight?

At Highland Park Improvement Club

Having trouble getting it on paper or getting on stage?
Me, too!

I had to construct a way for me to work through my fear and ended up creating improv poetry. Only, I created it AS I was just getting onto poetry stages in 1997. I had to create a way for my voice to literally emerge from me that didn’t sound like everybody else on stage and was true to my craft. Improv, Stand-up comedy, and Slam broke me down, then built me up. They helped me learn not to be afraid (okay, less afraid) of that damn microphone and audience. It got me to concentrate on why I was there: My work. My writing.

I want to show you some techniques and exercises in writing and stage work to help you simply feel comfortable. This will include reading, editing, rewriting, and performing in front of your classmates. The goal, though, is to get you on stage with an audience and a microphone.

I also work one-on-one with people if you’re not ready for a group dynamic. Hey – I’m not a fan, either, but collaboration and healthy critique are valuable skin-thickeners!

Come to the workshop!

What to Bring:
Please wear shoes which promote forward motion. Please bring at least 2 water bottles.

About Me:
I started out taking classes to force myself to move because it was hard for me to walk on level ground.

IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SWEAT! After 4 months, there was a different me. Not only was I able to move in the classes, I started losing weight! 35lbs so far! 6 months later my love and passion for ZUMBA fitness has manifested into becoming a licensed instructor!

YEAH! Every class feels like a party! The environment is exhilarating, we are all here for the same reasons: to have fun, get energized, get away from every day stresses, and reach that common goal of healthy living. Come join me and you’ll see what I mean.

I want to share this amazing feeling with you! You don’t even have to know how to dance. (Major emphasis on not needing to know how to dance) Just move your body at your personal intensity and follow my lead. It’s easy! Come try it, I guarantee you will have a blast! I look forward to meeting you!

No Corner Bar tomorrow!

The Corner Bar is contemplating the New Year and resting up from 2012 – so no Corner Bar this Friday.

Starting February 1, the Corner Bar returns every month on first Fridays.

Thanks to all who participated –  walkers, performers, musicians, volunteers, appreciators and partiers – in the Not-So-Silent Night Parade, the Sage Comet and the special New Years Eve Corner Bar. And thanks to the West Seattle Blog for a great feature on the events. See it here.

Happy New Year to all!
